Vestry Highlights—Sunday, July 20, 2008
By Bob Waite, Senior Warden
The Good News, the Bad News, and the Really Bad News!
- We welcomed Teri Helton back—she thanked everyone for their concern and prayers.
- Treasurer’s Report
- Jim Cecil reported that all is going well with the Budget. The negative ending from May had been a concern, but the month of June ended on the positive side. The new Financial Secretary, Sarah Allen-Moor is doing an outstanding job.
- We discussed the possibility of making the Labyrinth permanent so that maintenance and expenses might be reduced.
- Sexton’s Report
- Cliff Aggen reported that some sewer lines have been cleaned out along with several other on-going maintenance items.
- The greatest project has been the termite fumigation. The Rectory was fumigated before the tenants moved in. The Church building, CLC classroom wing, and the Office/Parish Hall/Kitchen buildings were tented together on June 30-July1. Prior to the fumigation, we were aware of some damage to roofs—in particular to the main Church building. You may recall in the last rainy season, we had pails to catch the drips. However, during the tenting and fumigation process, more damage was done to the Church Roof. Many tiles along the crown were broken from the fumigation workers. Cliff has contacted 9 roofing contractors and is in the process of securing competitive bids for roof repairs.
- In the process of inspecting the roofs, it was revealed that the flat roofs over the Narthex and covered walk-way as well as over the Altar Guild Sacristy need repairing. We knew the asphalt shingles on the Rectory have heat damage along the crown, causing the crown shingles to curl. The inspection has revealed that the Parish Hall roof has similar damage, but not as extensive. Needless to say, these repair items are beyond that which was planned in the budget and we will be reporting back to the Parish after all bids are in and an action plan has been determined.
- Barbeque Report: It was reported that Jesse and Maria Fernandez have graciously agreed to chair the event. A planning meeting has taken place and coordinators for the various jobs are being lined up prior to a meeting for all coordinators on July 29 at 7:30 p.m.
- Rector’s Report
- Fr. Greg reminded the Vestry of the date for the Pit Barbeque: September 20.
- The upcoming Concert Series will feature a Celtic theme.
- Fr. Greg pointed out the wedding of our former Associate Rector, Kate Lewis to Pat Hendrickson.
- Children’s Learning Center
- Al Bianco reported on enrollment and school fundraisers. The school is doing very well, but the Board needs new members to replace those going off the Board.
- Threshold Project
- The St. Columba’s booth at the Camarillo Fiesta was a success—we gave out a lot of St. Columba’s pens, balloons, water bottles, and Barbeque flyers.
- The next Threshold meeting will be August 6 at 7:00 p.m.
- There will be a training workshop for interested persons on September 6. More details to follow.
- Parish Website
- We try to keep the website up-to-date. “This Week at St. Columba’s” offers an excellent way for Parishioners to keep informed.
- Health Ministries
- Teri Helton reported the Blood Drive will be Sunday August 10. Nota Bene: this date has been subsequently changed to August 17.
- The Health Ministries will be meeting on August 3.
- Social Committee
- It was reported that the Progressive Dinner was cancelled this year, as Brett’s Concert was moved to that date—August 16. For the concert, bring a picnic dinner at 5:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 6:30 p.m.
- Twenty-eight Parishioners and a few friends gathered at Constitution Park for the Moorpark Symphony concert on Sunday, July 19.
- The Beer Fest will be November 15. More details to follow.
- The Parish Ministry Fair will be Sunday, September 7.
